One of my favourite magazine segments in life is Stylist magazine’s 5 minute philosopher. Usually on the last page, it always felt like a satisfying morsel to finish the magazine on. As I was reading the latest issue, I thought let me hijack some of the questions posed to British actress Naomi Harris and do one of my own!
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE?
Who the f*** knows. I think it’s about exploration, freedom and enjoyment. I truly buy into the idea that life isn’t meant to be a struggle though I’m still trying to figure out how that actually works. There should be joy every day to counter the frustration.
WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST ALIVE?
When I’m learning about someone through their creative achievements. It’s inspiring to see people soar in their element.
BOLD RED OR BUTTER YELLOW?
Bold red as red is my favourite colour. It’s unapologetic, unmissable, brave, heated, spirited, distinctive, and passionate. Characteristics I love and aspire to have.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU OFTEN GIVE TO YOUR FRIENDS?
I often tell them to give themselves grace. I think we spend too much time wanting to be better for others and not primarily for ourselves. Also we can miss how great we already are, dwelling on one bad moment. I also tell them you made the best decision you could with the information you had at the time.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU REALLY LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF?
My ability to read people and situations. I think I’m quite intuitive and observant which puts me in good stead. Do I get it right every time? Nope, my skills are ALWAYS wrong in romantic scenarios but I think if you watch and listen to people they show you who they truly are.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME I TRIED SOMETHING NEW?
I got my latest tattoo in red ink. I committed permanently to my new thing!
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR STYLE?
I think quirky. I love a slogan tee. I love African prints. I love bright colours.
WHAT’S YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE?
Physical touch though I like this more recent idea that you should experience them all.
WHAT’S THE ONE BOOK YOU RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE?
The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It’s one of the few books i come back to repeatedly and is a reminder that people are living in their own ‘dream’ state influenced by their environment. It’s a grounding book for me when I get caught up in the feelings of it all.
WHAT GIVES YOU HOPE RIGHT NOW?
The comfort of knowing that there’s something beyond me in the world. I believe there’s a life beyond what we can see and rationalise.
